Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,[a] and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of[b] the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
— Hebrews 12:1-2
I love this image of running the race set before us. The cloud of witnesses (heroes of the faith who stepped out in obedience to the Lord) testifies to us that God is good and is faithful to complete his promises. We must set aside everything that slows us down and fix our eyes on Jesus, who began this work and will bring it to completion (isn’t it great that the weight of that doesn’t rest on our shoulders?!). We may endure suffering and scorn—Jesus, after all, endured the cross—but this work is surely not in vain.
This past weekend many people in Eastern North Carolina participated in a literal race, The Good Samaritan Cross Training 5K, that benefited Hope of Glory Ministries. Our own Jeremy Griffin actually won the race! This race provided an opportunity for people from Covenant to support our partner ministry, build community, and use their bodies to the glory of God.
Hope of Glory Ministries is a local non-profit that is committed to serving others practically and spiritually through a Food Co-op program, a Community Outlet store, Bible Studies, and outreaches. They work to empower individuals and families toward financial stability and biblical stewardship so they can flourish without the need for government or charity assistance.
According to their Third Quarter 2018 Ministry Highlights, they have 24 active families who have saved $39,171 in groceries through their co-op and have placed $10,068 in savings and paid off $29,955 in debt!
Hope of Glory Ministries equips families to run the race of life with perseverance; what a privilege it is that we get to come alongside them in encouragement and partnership even as they come alongside and encourage families!
